Photo 1: Standard UK style Automatic Warning System (AWS) unit as normally installed between the running rails. These devices are always fitted with a ramp at the approach end to reduce the risk of damage from loose train mounted equipment.

Photo 2: Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) unit as normally installed between the running rails. Here the arming unit and trigger units are mounted together at the approach to a signal to ensure there is an immediate brake application if the train is not stopping.
